The College of Archi-tecture of the University of Northern Philippines hosted the 14th Annual Conference on Architec-tural Research and Edu-cation on February 19 and 20, 2015. The theme of this year’s conference is “SABANGAN: Conver-gence of Culture and Heritage in Develop-ment”. The Conference was held at Tadena Hall, UNP. Participants of the conference were archi-tects from the different parts of the country. The two-day conference had five sessions wherein 11 papers were pre-sented.
Day 1 Session 1 has “The Solar Orientation of the Azotea of Vigan An-cestral Houses” by Architect Fatima Nicetas A. Rabang- Alonzo, UNP; Session 2, Urban Land-scape and Tropical De-sign had “Vigan Ancestral Houses: a Climate Responsive Building” by Archt. Ludivina A. Loza-no, UNP; “The Green Loop: A Socio-Ecological Resilient Approach for a more Liveable Cebu” by Archt. Joseph Michael P. Espina, University of San Carlos; “Flood Vulnerability Assessment of Build-ings in Urban Area of Kabacan, North Cotabato by Archt. Myrafe L. Se-bastian, University of the Philippines, Mindanao; and Session Three, Build-ing Materials and Tech-nology had “The Rise and Fall of Brick Manu-facturing in Three South-east Asian Countries: Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines – A Com-parative Study” by Gre-goria M. Mercado, Far Eastern University/ Na-tional University; and “A Study on Total Volatile Organic Compound Emis-sion of Philippine Ply-wood: Finish, Age and Environment”, Erika Vix-en H. Dia and Dr. Luis Ma. T. Bo-ot, UP Diliman.
The second day of the conference had Ses-sion 4, Education and Community Architecture, which had the presenta-tions on “Knowledge in Basic Geography of Selected Education Stu-dents: An Assessment” by Dr. Corazon G. Pardo; “The Culture of Kinetic: Understanding the Con-nections between Human Consciousness and infor-mal Settlements” by Kelly O’Brien, Mapua Institute of Technology.
The Session 5, Heritage Conservation and Tourism, had three presentations namely: “Archdiocesan Commis-sion for Cultural Heritage of the Church – In Ser-vice of Professional Herit-age Conservation” by Br. Bela Lanyi, University of San Carlos; Opportunities in Disaster: Strategies for Increased Resilience of Eminent Churches in Se-lected Heritage-Rich, Disaster Prone Localities of Albay, Philippines” by Claudia Isabelle V. Mon-tero, UP Diliman; and “The Legacy of San Juan, Batangas: A Heritage Tourism Destination” by Jeremy Jade Balagat, Katherine Anne G. Cor-rea, and Mar Lorence G. Ticao, De La Salle- Col-lege of Saint Benilde/Far Eastern University.
Present during the opening of the confer-ence were UNP President Dr. Gilbert R. Arce and Prof. Christopher Stone-wall P. Espina, Chairper-son, Council of Architec-tural Researchers and Educators Board of Di-rectors. The Dean of the College of Architecture is Archt. Fatima Nicetas A. Rabang- Alonzo.
