Roboticist discusses robotics for sustainable development at UNP

Dr. Albert Causo, a distinguished Balik Scientist and roboticist, visited Ilocos Sur to share strategies for advancing robotics initiatives and integrating robotics into educational curricula. He also guided state universities and colleges (SUCs) on how they can contribute to sustainable efforts toward applicable research agendas in the province.

The event was organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Provincial Office–Ilocos Sur, led by Provincial Director Engr. Jordan L. Abad.

The event was held at the University of Northern Philippines on December 6, 2024. Dr. Causo delivered a talk titled “Exploring the World of Robotics Towards Sustainable Development.” During his presentation, Dr. Causo shared insights from his Balik Scientist journey, discussed the process of moving robots from the lab to the market, outlined best practices for building successful ventures, and highlighted robotics opportunities in Region 1.

Dr. Jayson P. Rogelio, currently serving as the Supervising Science Research Specialist and head at the DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Centre (DOST-MIRDC), also participated in the event and contributed to the discussions.

Dr. Erwin F. Cadorna, president of UNP, opened the program, emphasizing the University’s role in fostering innovation and collaboration for regional development.

An open forum followed, where Dr. Causo and Dr. Rogelio engaged with the audience, providing thoughtful answers to their questions. A key topic raised was intellectual property rights and patenting, with several attendees seeking advice on protecting robotics innovations.

Dr. Causo and Dr. Rogelio explained the importance of securing patents and the processes involved, highlighting how intellectual property protection supports innovation and the commercialization of new technologies.

Dr. Julius Moises S. Albalos, dean of the College of Technology, delivered the closing remarks, expressing gratitude to DOST and the speakers for their contribution to the symposium.

The event was attended by faculty members from various colleges at UNP, students from the BS Physics and Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics and Automation Technology programs, and faculty from Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC).
