Fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Environmental Planning students of the University of Northern Philippines College of Architecture and Built Environment were formally vested as environmental stewards during the 3rd Environmental Custodian Investiture Ceremony at the Tadena Hall on August 28, 2026.
Calling on the students to turn knowledge into meaningful action, the University President Dr. Erwin Cadorna emphasized the urgency of their role amid worsening ecological degradation and climate challenges. The President challenged the future planners to harness their academic training, technical expertise, and professional skills as powerful tools for protecting the environment, emphasizing that today’s complex environmental realities demand bold, innovative, and proactive leadership.
Echoing the call for dedicated stewardship, Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners National President Atty. Leonardo Del Carmen Jr., represented by EnP Carlo Dacera, highlighted the indispensable yet often unsung role of environmental planners. Atty. Del Carmen stressed that while the profession rarely occupies the public spotlight, the gravity and magnitude of its contributions shape the future of human habitats and ecosystems.
Emphasizing the shared responsibility to protect the planet, Atty. Del Carmen reminded the future planners that “the Earth is not a possession we own, but a home we share.” He challenged them to remain adaptable amid evolving climate realities while upholding professional integrity in every decision they make. He urged the students to ground their recommendations in empirical evidence, choose what is right over what is merely convenient, and prioritize long-term environmental welfare despite short-term pressures. His message was anchored on the principle Terra nostra, cura nostra—“Our earth, our care”—emphasizing the planners’ vital role in advancing sustainable and responsible development.
Architect Ludivina Lozano reinforced the significance of the rite, reminding the candidates that donning the custodian jacket extends far beyond academic completion. Lozano noted that th jacket serves as a badge of public responsibility, signifying that the vestees are prepared to step forward in building sustainable, resilient, and climate-adaptive communities.
The ceremony marked a significant step in strengthening UNP’s environmental and professional networks with the formalization of two strategic partnerships. The University signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the City Government of Vigan, represented by Mayor Randy Singson and City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Mr. Teddy Boy Corpuz, to reinforce collaborative efforts in advancing local environmental programs and initiatives.
A second MOA was forged with the Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners (PIEP)–Ilocos Sur Chapter, represented by EnP Jeffrey Arenas, to expand opportunities for professional mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and regional planning initiatives. The partnerships emphasize UNP’s commitment to connect academic preparation with practical environmental governance and professional development.
Closing the ceremony, student representative Ms. Kathlene Marcelle Periñon paid tribute to the parents and guardians whose unwavering support and sacrifices helped the students reach the milestone. She likewise affirmed the cohort’s collective commitment to pursue Per curam ad semitam viridem—advancing through care toward the green path—as they prepare to carry their knowledge and responsibilities into the field of environmental planning.
