UNP-CArBE scores three finalist spots in ASEAN Architecture Festival 2026

The University of Northern Philippines College of Architecture and Built Environment (UNP-CArBE) earned national recognition after three of its thesis works emerged as finalists in the Anthology ASEAN Architecture Festival 2026 Thesis Competition, with the finalists honored during the awarding ceremony held on October 4, 2026 at Teatrillo, Intramuros, Manila.

The three UNP-CArBE thesis finalists presented distinct architectural responses to contemporary urban, cultural, and environmental challenges. John Ernie Pacis was recognized for “Reimagining the Baguio public market through a neo-vernacular and smart architecture approach,” while Desiree Anne Moncillo earned finalist honors for “A conservatory of performing arts in Ilocos Norte: An architectural response to cultural intermittence through continuum cycle approach.” Completing the University’s roster of finalists was Jeronimo Valdez, whose thesis, “Ylocos Botanical Complex: Symbiotic design model facility for the revival and evolution of naturopathy,” explored architecture’s potential to support the revival and development of traditional naturopathic practices.

The three thesis works reflect the breadth of architectural research being pursued by UNP-CArBE students, addressing diverse concerns in urban development, cultural preservation, and traditional health practices. Pacis’ study reimagines the Baguio Public Market through the integration of neo-vernacular principles and smart architecture; Moncillo’s work envisions a performing arts conservatory in Ilocos Norte designed to sustain cultural continuity; while Valdez’s thesis proposes a botanical complex aimed at supporting the revival and evolution of naturopathy.

Through its thesis competition and related programs, the Anthology ASEAN Architecture Festival 2026 provides a platform for emerging architects to present innovative design research and engage with contemporary architectural ideas in the region. The selection of three UNP-CArBE works among the finalists emphasizes the College’s growing contribution to the architectural discourse and showcases the diverse, research-driven design perspectives emerging from its students.
