Sharpening students’ statistical literacy, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills, the University of Northern Philippines, through the College of Arts and Sciences- Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (CAS-DMNS), staged “StatQuest: The University Selection for the 30th Philippine Statistics Quiz,” a university-wide statistics quiz competition on September 24, 2026 at the Hostel Function Room.
The academic competition brought together student participants in a challenging showcase of their knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of statistics, highlighting the vital role of statistical competence in academic learning.
Facilitated by the faculty members of DMNS under the leadership of Dr. Restituto Llagas, the competition challenged students to apply their knowledge of statistics in a demanding academic setting. Beyond testing their mastery of statistical concepts, the event engaged participants in analytical reasoning, data interpretation, and problem-solving, enabling them to demonstrate their ability to apply quantitative knowledge accurately and effectively under competitive conditions.
Among the 19 students who took part in the university-wide competition, Mr. Asher Clyde Maala of BS Civil Engineering 1D, Ms. Kayla Pescador of Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Science, and Mr. Rein Andrei Avero of BS Geodetic Engineering 1A emerged as the top three finishers, demonstrating strong command of statistical concepts, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving throughout the competition.
Their performance placed them at the forefront of the field and highlighted the growing capacity of UNP students to apply statistical knowledge and quantitative skills in an academic competition.
The Top 3 winners will advance to the Provincial-Level Statistics Quiz Competition as official representatives of the University of Northern Philippines, bringing with them the University’s commitment to academic excellence and quantitative competence.
Their achievement reflects not only their mastery of statistical concepts but also their ability to apply critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills under competitive conditions. Their selection further highlights UNP’s continuing efforts to equip students with the knowledge and competencies needed to excel in statistics, data analysis, and evidence-based decision-making, while providing them with opportunities to showcase their academic capabilities beyond the University.
