share:

The University celebrated its 59th Founding Anniversary, with the theme “UNP @ 59: Evolving Excellence and Inspiring Innovation Beyond Borders” from October 7-18, 2024. One of the major activities focuses on climate change, therefore the office of the International Affairs and External Linkages participated in a vital community outreach initiative — a tree planting held in Tamurong, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur. This event was organized in response to the urgent challenges posed by climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation, which have created an urgent need for proactive community initiatives that foster sustainability. The commitment to environmental conservation has become increasingly important in today’s world, where the effects of climate change are evident.

This activity aimed to promote environmental sustainability and community engagement. The primary objectives of the said activity were to restore and rehabilitate degraded areas among Tamurong, to raise awareness about the importance of trees in combating climate change and supporting biodiversity, and to foster spirit of volunteerism and community participation.

The event commenced at 8:00 am with an opening program by the local officials led by the Engr. Nestor B. Pajaro, the City Councilor. A variety of native tress species, such as Nara, Mahogany, and Acacia were chosen for planting to ensure biodiversity, and ecological balance. Participants prepared the planting sites by clearing debris and marking planting holes. As they dug into the earth, laughter and camaraderie filled the air. The activity transformed into not just a task but a shared experience that deepened their bonds as colleagues and advocated for environmental stewardship.
