From awareness to action: UNP drives sustainable waste management practices

Strengthening its drive for environmental sustainability and responsible campus management, the University of Northern Philippines, through its Environmental Management Office, conducted a four-day seminar on Solid Waste Management and Waste Analysis and Characterization from October 27 to 30, 2026, at the Old College of Technology (CTech) Function Hall.

The seminar brought together Environmental Planning students, food stall owners, and janitorial personnel, recognizing their vital roles in implementing and sustaining effective waste management practices throughout the University. Their participation highlighted the importance of a coordinated, campus-wide approach to environmental protection, particularly in ensuring that waste is properly managed at every stage, from generation and segregation to collection and disposal. By engaging these key stakeholders, the initiative promoted shared responsibility and collective action in building a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable university community.

Serving as the resource speaker, Ms. Anna Liza Europa-Morales, Head of the Environmental Management Office, provided comprehensive discussions on the principles, processes, and practical applications of solid waste management and waste analysis and characterization. She emphasized the need for systematic and responsible waste management, highlighting proper waste segregation, waste reduction, and recycling as fundamental practices in curbing waste generation and minimizing the University’s environmental footprint.

She also stressed the value of evidence-based and data-driven approaches in developing effective waste management programs, particularly through waste analysis and characterization, which provide essential information for identifying waste types, measuring waste generation, and determining appropriate disposal, recovery, and recycling strategies. Through these measures, she called for stronger institutional efforts to address environmental concerns and promote a shared sense of environmental accountability among administrators, faculty members, staff, and students.

The seminar emphasized the importance of integrating proper waste segregation at source, recycling, composting, and responsible waste disposal into the University’s daily operations as fundamental measures for an effective and sustainable waste management system. It also sought to translate environmental awareness into concrete practices by encouraging members of the University community to take an active role in reducing waste generation, maximizing resource recovery, and maintaining a clean and healthy campus environment.

Through this initiative, UNP further strengthened its institutional commitment of making environmental responsibility a shared practice rather than merely an advocacy. By promoting discipline, accountability, and active participation among its stakeholders, the University continues to advance a culture of sustainability and collective responsibility toward a cleaner, greener, and more environmentally conscious campus.
