From craft to commerce: UNP builds livelihood skills through candle-making training

Advancing livelihood skills and product development, University of Northern Philippines Office of the Vice President for Research and Extension, in collaboration with the University Extension Office, and College of Business Administration and Accountancy conducted a candle-making, packaging, and labeling training on October 17, 2026, at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

The training aimed to equip participants with hands-on candle-making skills and practical knowledge of packaging and labeling to improve product quality, presentation, and market appeal. It also sought to expand livelihood opportunities and encourage entrepreneurial ventures by enhancing participants’ technical capabilities and introducing value-adding practices that could help make their products more competitive in the market.

Prof. May Evelia Ruadap and Mr. Aristotle Piamonte led the candle-making sessions, guiding participants through the hands-on production of decorative candles and imparting practical techniques to enhance their craftsmanship.

Complementing the skills training, Ms. Illah Diva Faypon served as the resource speaker on packaging and labeling, highlighting the importance of effective product presentation, appropriate packaging materials, and proper labeling practices in preparing products for the market. Her discussion emphasized how these elements contribute to product quality, consumer appeal, and market readiness, enabling participants to better position their products for potential livelihood and entrepreneurial ventures.

Dr. Eileen Rose Paculan facilitated the activity, coordinated the implementation of the training and helped ensure that its learning objectives were achieved.

The initiative reflects the University’s commitment to community engagement, livelihood development, and entrepreneurship promotion. By providing practical training and sharing relevant knowledge, the University aims to equip participants with skills that can open opportunities for income generation, encourage entrepreneurial ventures, and support the establishment of sustainable livelihood initiatives.

Through this collaborative undertaking, UNP continues to deliver responsive extension services that address the needs of its partner institutions and communities, translating its expertise into practical opportunities for skills development, economic empowerment, and community advancement.
