Preparing for climate challenges: UNP brings disaster awareness to SPBES

Equipping learners and school stakeholders with essential knowledge and practical strategies for disaster preparedness, the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) program of the University of Northern Philippines conducted a Disaster Management Training and Orientation on October 21, 2026 at Salindeg-Pong-ol Barraca Elementary School (SPBES).

Spearheaded by the BEED Program through its extension initiatives under the leadership of Program Head Dr. Eleuteria Pacpaco, the activity emphasized the importance of disaster awareness and preparedness in responding to natural hazards and changing environmental conditions. It also reinforced the partnership between UNP and SPBES in advancing initiatives that protect the safety and promote the well-being of learners, families, and the wider community.

The activity was attended by Ms. Sheryl Pata, Officer-in-Charge of SPBES, and Mr. Odilon Amay, Parent-Teacher Association President, whose participation reflected the importance of collaboration in advancing disaster preparedness. The involvement of teachers, student leaders, environmental advocates, and parents further emphasized that community safety is a collective responsibility that begins with awareness, grows through cooperation, and translates into concrete action to protect lives and promote community resilience.

A major highlight of the orientation was the discussion on Super El Niño and its potential impacts, including prolonged dry spells, extreme heat, and water scarcity. Participants learned practical measures to mitigate these effects, such as conserving water, observing proper hygiene, and taking precautions against heat-related illnesses. The discussion also emphasized the importance of adopting simple, proactive practices at home and in school to help protect health, conserve resources, and build resilience against climate-related challenges.

To reinforce the practical application of the lessons discussed, flyers containing essential information and precautionary measures on Super El Niño were distributed to participants. The materials serve as handy references that can be shared with families and other community members, extending awareness and preparedness efforts beyond the school and into the wider community.

Beyond raising awareness, the activity encouraged participants to apply practical measures in their daily lives to reduce the risks posed by environmental hazards. By equipping school stakeholders with essential knowledge and preparedness strategies, the BEED Program aims to cultivate a community capable of responding to emerging challenges with informed decisions, coordinated action, and greater confidence.

The initiative reflects the continuing commitment of the University of Northern Philippines–College of Teacher Education to community extension and service, particularly in helping schools and communities enhance their safety and disaster resilience. Through sustained collaboration with SPBES and its stakeholders, the BEED Program continues to advance initiatives that promote environmental responsibility, disaster risk awareness, and the protection and well-being of the community.
