The University of Northern Philippines strengthened its advocacy for student welfare and safe, inclusive learning environments as Dr. Marifel Acena, Head of the Student Welfare Services Office and Program Head of the Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling, shared her expertise at the Violence Prevention and Anti-Bullying Youth Summit on September 22, 2026, at Busi-ing Integrated School.
Organized by the Ilocos Sur Medical Society (ISMS) as a province-wide interactive campaign, the summit highlighted the vital role of young people and communities in confronting bullying and violence. Anchored on the theme “Respect Starts with Me. Safety Starts with Us,” the initiative promoted a culture of respect, empathy, and emotional resilience while encouraging learners to stand against harmful behavior and help build safer, more inclusive learning environments.
As facilitator, Dr. Acena engaged the participants in the interactive activity “Walk in My Shoes: One Story, Four Perspectives,” which encouraged students to examine bullying from the distinct viewpoints of the victim, bully, bystander, and upstander. Through guided scenarios, reflection exercises, and active audience participation, the session demonstrated how bullying can affect an entire school community while emphasizing that learners can make safe, responsible, and constructive choices when confronted with harmful behavior.
Dr. Acena’s participation further highlighted the University of Northern Philippines’ commitment to extend its expertise in guidance, counseling, and student welfare beyond the university. Through partnerships with schools and community organizations, UNP continues to share its knowledge and resources in promoting positive relationships, empathy, and mutual respect—helping create learning environments where every student can feel safe, valued, and supported.
