About Us

The desire for the establishment of a medical school in UNP initially took the extra mile when the proposal made by then Regent Antonio R. Lahoz gained the full support of the UNP Board of Regents. It was able to smoothly advance into the scrutiny of the Provincial Board of the Province of Ilocos Sur. On October 17, 1989, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Resolution No. 180, which sought for the establishment of the College of Medicine and the College of Law in the University of Northern Philippines, was unanimously approved. In August 1991, the UNP administration, led by then President Dr. Dorotea C. Filart convened with the key officials of the University of the Philippines, including the Dean of the College of Medicine for a consultation meeting.

Medicine Week

Medicine Week is a national celebration as mandated by law (Presidential Proclamation No. 439 of 1957). This is an annual event designated to be celebrated every 4 th week of September with the purpose of developing consciousness among our people of the value of scientific medical practices. Its observance is under the authority of the Philippine Medical Association. The College of Medicine patterns its week-long activities according to the theme set by the PMA each year. Active partnership between the College and the Ilocos Sur Medical Society ensures the dynamic participation of the faculty and the medical students in sponsoring numerous activities.

SIGNIFICANCE IN THE CULTURE OF THE COLLEGE:
The culmination of the Medicine Week is the Dr. Antonio R. Lahoz Memorial Scientific Forum, where speakers from different specialty fields in medicine honor the legacy of Dr. Antonio R. Lahoz as founder of the UNP-College of Medicine by delivering medical updates and breakthroughs.

“The College of Medicine became a backbone in my career. It nourished and guided me when I was a student so that I am able to become an established physician. Among my best experiences was meeting my great friends who taught me about valuable things in life, things that I still treasure and value up to this day. I'm sure I would not be able to meet them if not for the College of Medicine. Together we overcame the hardships that strengthened us and molded us to be better physicians and better persons.”

“The College of Medicine was of great help during my time. I was a part time instructor at the college of health sciences way back 2009-2010, until I decided to pursue my dream - to become a physician however my mother was a widow and we only have small time business as our source of fund at that time, but the college of medicine at the university of northern philippines was the perfect school for me to attend my medical school for the following reasons:
1. It was the most accessible school near my place
2. The tuition fee and other school fees were affordable
3. The mode of instruction was PBL which suits my personality as well as my way of learning
4. The tutors were accommodating with a very kind heart

These are just the few reasons why I am where I am now as a physician. Without the UNP CHS department of Medicine now as the College of Medicine I will never achieve my dream— to become a good physician.”
