About Us

The University of Northern Philippines, the oldest university in the North, offered Social Work in response to the rising demand by both government and non-government organizations for professional social workers in the early 1970s. It was initially offered as a major of Bachelor of Arts (AB) in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1976. It became a full degree program in 1978 with the establishment of the then Institute of Social Work and Community Development (ISWCD). The ISWCD, thus, saw its first batch of graduates in Class 1980, comprised of two males and twelve females with one graduating as magna cum laude.

Social Work Week Celebration

The Social Work Week celebration is an annual event conducted by the College through the student organization which aims to promote the social work profession. It is also a way by which the college develops cooperation, collaboration and unity among the Social Work students as this event will create an environment where the students recognize the importance and the significance of the profession of social work in our society and to the whole world.

Our Graduates

“College life has offered me a myriad of experiences that greatly contributed to shaping the leader that I am today. I belong to Class 1999 of the Institute of Social Work in my beloved Alma Mater, University of Northern Philippines. After graduation, I immediately applied for a Social Worker position at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office I, where I slowly rose from the ranks of a Social Welfare Officer II Cost of Service Worker to Director III, designated as Assistant Regional Director of DSWD Field Office 3. I would not have made it this far without the solid foundation that my Alma Mater has given me. College life taught me to embrace opportunities, appreciate diverse perspectives, overcome challenges, seek guidance from mentors, and initiate positive change.”

The then Institute of Social Work and Community Development, now known as College of Social Work at the University of Norther Philippines has played a vital role of who am I today. It provided me the knowledge, values and attitudes that a Social Worker should possess through the theories that were taught during my stay in the college. The values and attitudes were further enhanced through the on-the-job training program of the College which gave me the opportunity to deal with different clientele groups using the three primary methods of Social Work.
