UNP students explore Ilocos heritage through Museum Caravan 2026

Promoting heritage appreciation and experiential learning, students of the University of Northern Philippines explored the rich historical and cultural treasures of Ilocos Sur through the Museum Caravan 2026, an outreach program of the National Museum of the Philippines–Ilocos held on October 22–25, 2026.

The activity brought together students from various academic programs of the university, including the Bachelor of Arts in Communication of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS); Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, Bachelor of Special Needs Education, and Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English of the College of Teacher Education (CTE); and Bachelor in Library and Information Science of the College of Computer and Information Technology (CCIT).

Through a guided tour of NMP–Ilocos and its heritage collections, the participants gained opportunities to deepen their understanding of the province’s historical narratives, cultural traditions, and significant contributions to Philippine history.

Among the featured destinations were the Father Burgos Museum, now under the care of NMP–Ilocos; the Old Provincial Jail, which houses historical accounts and artifacts associated with the Basi Revolt; the Iloko Abel collection; the Watch Towers of Ilocos Sur; and memorabilia of former Philippine President Elpidio Quirino. These heritage sites and collections offered students a closer look at the events, traditions, and personalities that have shaped the identity of Ilocos Sur and the nation.

Following the guided tour, the students participated in a Quiz Bee organized by the NMP–Ilocos staff headed by Ms. Malot Ingel. The activity provided an opportunity for participants to recall and apply the historical and cultural knowledge they acquired during the tour while encouraging active engagement with local heritage.

Accompanying the CCIT students were Dr. Leilani Basa and Prof. Joel Morales, while Dr. Santiago Reolalas, head of Museo de la Unibersdad, accompanied the participants from CAS and CTE.

The Museum Caravan 2026 forms part of NMP–Ilocos’ annual observance of Museums and Galleries Month every October. Through educational tours and interactive activities, the initiative seeks to bring museums closer to learners and communities, making cultural heritage more accessible and meaningful to the public.

The university’s participation highlights the value of integrating heritage education into academic learning, enabling students from communication, teacher education, and library and information science programs to connect classroom knowledge with historical evidence and cultural resources. The experience also reinforces the role of museums as vital learning spaces that preserve collective memory, promote cultural understanding, and inspire future generations to appreciate and safeguard the country’s heritage.
