UNP promotes student mental wellness through fun and connection

Promoting mental well-being through fun, movement, and meaningful social interaction, the University of Northern Philippines brought together students, faculty, and staff for “FUNdaMENTAL: Where Fun Meets Mental Wellness” on October 28, 2026 at the University Gymnasium in observance of Mental Health Month.

Organized by the Guidance and Counseling Services under the Student Welfare Services Office of the Office of Student Affairs and Services, the activity mobilized a broad network of student organizations and community partners, including the Student Council, UN SDSN Youth Philippines, JCI Vigan, the Students of Arts and Sciences Organization, the Rotary Club of Magsingal North, and the Peer Facilitators Club, to advance mental health awareness and promote holistic student well-being.

Student Council President Hon. Rachel Anne Imperial encouraged her fellow students to seek professional help whenever necessary and to give their mental health the same attention and care as their physical well-being. She reassured them that the University Guidance Office remains a safe, welcoming, and supportive space where they can openly express their concerns, seek guidance, and access the assistance they need.

Meanwhile, guidance counselor Ms. Glenny Angellica Barrientos facilitated the presentation of the personnel and services of the Guidance and Counseling Services, highlighting the unit’s vital role in supporting students throughout their mental health and personal development journeys. The session clarified that the Guidance Office is not a center for disciplinary action but a trusted support system where students can freely discuss their challenges, receive appropriate guidance, and find help in navigating their academic and personal concerns.

The celebration continued with a solidarity dance led by volunteers and facilitators, promoting unity and camaraderie among participants, followed by a yoga session facilitated by Ms. Joana Cara Medina of JCI Vigan. Through simple yoga poses and guided movements, participants explored practical ways to ease tension, relax their bodies, and cultivate a calmer mind. Interactive booths further enriched the experience through games and engaging activities that encouraged self-care and the development of positive mental wellness habits.

Extending the initiative beyond mental health awareness, the Rotary Club of Magsingal North provided free medical check-ups and medicines for faculty and staff, emphasizing the importance of accessible health services and holistic well-being for every member of the university community.

In his closing message, Dr. Mariano Paterno Avila, Director of the Office of Student Affairs and Services, encapsulated the event’s central message: “Fun is fundamental to mental wellness and well-being.” Through “FUNdaMENTAL: Where Fun Meets Mental Wellness,” the University reaffirmed its commitment to cultivate a supportive and inclusive academic environment where students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to prioritize their well-being, build meaningful connections, and thrive both personally and academically.
