UNP CLAW

The University of Northern Philippines–College of Law is the only law school in the Province of Ilocos Sur.

Way back in 1989, the Ilocos Sur Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed SP Resolution No. 180 S. 1989 requesting the University through the Board of Regents to establish the College of Health and Sciences and the College of Law. Subsequently, a feasibility study prepared by then UNP Center for Research spearheaded by Dr. Ferdinand Lamarca was approved by the board. However, the plan to put up the College of Law was shelved to paved way the creation of the College of Health and Sciences which was then considered as more urgent.

In 1998, when Dr. Lauro B. Tacbas became the University President, he ordered the update of the study concerning the establishment of the College of Law. On June 2001, the executive summary of the FS was presented to and approved by the Academic Council.

In July 2001, President Tacbas submitted the proposal to the UNP Board of Regents for deliberation. Two recommendations were made, first, the need for an assessment of the readiness of the proposed program by the Technical Panel for Legal Education and the need to secure the financial commitment of the Provincial Government to support the program. These recommendations were both accomplished. Hence, the proposal to establish the UNP College of Law was finally approved. It was established on March 5, 2002 through Board Resolution No. 13, Series of 2002.

The roster of faculty in the College of Law composed of private legal practitioners, public attorneys, public prosecutors, lawyers in administrative agencies, and judges are significant in order to teach law in good manner so that good lawyers are made in the pursuit of justice.

The graduates of the UNP College of Law are articulate and competent. Last 2019, it was ranked No. 8 Top Performing Law School in the Philippines for First Takers of Bar 2018.

Since 2006, our College has produced 46 good lawyers. They are employed as public prosecutors, public attorneys, lawyers in the academe, in administrative agencies and have their own private law offices.
