The University of Northern Philippines Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (BSMLS) program formally ushered 104 students into a new stage of professional preparation during its 4th Laboratory Coat and Pinning Ceremony on September 2, 2026 at the University Gymnasium.
The ceremony symbolized the students’ transition from classroom-based learning to clinical training, highlighting the discipline, competence, and professional responsibility expected of future medical laboratory scientists.
Held after two postponements due to inclement weather, the ceremony brought together the student inductees, their parents and families, faculty members, and University officials in a meaningful milestone in their academic journey.
Anchored on the theme, “The Measure of Tomorrow Starts Today: Pinning the Future of Diagnostic Excellence,” the ceremony emphasized the responsibilities that accompany the students’ transition toward the clinical phase of their education. The theme reflected the program’s focus on preparing future medical laboratory professionals whose competence and discipline will contribute to accurate and reliable diagnostic services.
More than a ceremonial tradition, the donning of the laboratory coat and the receiving of the pin represented the students’ readiness to carry the standards, discipline, and ethical responsibilities expected of future medical laboratory professionals. With their parents witnessing the occasion, the 104 students reached a significant stage in their BSMLS education as they prepared for the demands of internship and clinical laboratory practice.
The vesting of laboratory coats and pinning of 104 BSMLS students stood as the defining moment of the ceremony, symbolizing their readiness to move beyond academic preparation and assume greater responsibility as future medical laboratory professionals. The rite marked a significant step in their journey toward clinical practice, where competence, precision, professionalism, and ethical service are paramount.
Leading the vesting rites were UNP President Dr. Erwin Cadorna, College of Health Sciences Dean Dr. Joussie Bermio, Prof. Alfredo Corpuz, Mr. Ace Danielle Avero, and Prof. Sherwin Alvaro, who personally joined in formally welcoming the students into the next phase of their professional formation.
Adding significance to the occasion, Dr. Gregoria Najorda, former Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences of Northwestern University in Laoag City, was invited as Guest of Honor and Speaker. However, an accident that injured her patella prevented her from personally attending the ceremony. Despite her absence, Dr. Najorda’s inspirational message was delivered to the students through Mr. Ace Danielle Avero, BSMLS Program Head, who read her message on her behalf and conveyed her words of encouragement as the students embark on their clinical training.
UNP officials and CHS administrators joined the faculty in recognizing the students during the ceremony, reinforcing the shared responsibility of the University, families, and mentors in preparing them for professional practice.
After two weather-related delays, the ceremony finally gave the students and their families the opportunity to celebrate a long-awaited milestone in their journey toward becoming medical laboratory professionals.
