CTE extends community service 

The College of Teacher Education’s undergraduate and graduate programs extended community services in their adopted schools in adherence to the University-wide community outreach program.

The BSEd, MA Teaching English, MA Teaching Filipino, and MA Mathematics Education faculty, together with the BPEd faculty and student-leaders, spearheaded an extension program at Ag-Agrao National High School (ANHS), Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur on October 17, 2024.

The activity aimed to help integrate artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and innovative assessment tools in learning and reintroduce Laro ng Lahi. A breakout session immediately followed the opening program. For the students, Dr. Matilde Concordia led a hands-on lecture on Laro ng Lahi at the school gymnasium, which was facilitated by BPEd faculty and PADDEC members.

For the ANHS faculty, Dr. Jamaica V. Garcia introduced varied free AI tools and cautioned participants on the ethical considerations of AI usage. Dr. Mark Angelo Reotutar discussed Integrating innovative assessment tools in teaching, and Dr. Novelyn T. Barcena presented relevant studies on “Teacher-Talk.”

Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED), Master of Arts in Education (MAED), Doctor of Education (EdD), Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECED), and Bachelor of Special Needs Education (BSNED) joined forces at Salindeg Pong-ol Baracca Elementary School to implement the Project Dur-as: Reading Literacy Program. A diagnostic test for Grade 1 and Reading Literacy Program for Grades 2 to 6 were conducted. 

The Master of Arts in Education and Doctor of Education facilitated a retooling session for elementary teachers. Dr. Luzviminda P. Relon, director of the Instruction and Faculty Development Office of UNP, and Dr. Edmar M. Paguirigan, Coordinator of Research Publication, served as the resource speakers with their topics on innovative teaching strategies and game-based collaborative learning, respectively. In a research dissemination session, faculty members, including Dr. Eleuteria R. Pacpaco, Dr. Rainalda T. Rambuyon, Dr. Leilani R. Racquepo, Dr. Wendelyn R. Talbo, and Dr. Glenda R. Rabanal, presented their research to the school’s teaching staff.

Moreover, the Master of Arts in Technology and Livelihood Education, major in Home Economics (MATLE-HE), in partnership with the Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLED) and Bachelor of Technical-Vocational Teacher Education (BTVTED) programs, initiated an activity at the Bungro-Margaay Elementary School, Bungro Cabugao, Ilocos Sur. The said event was participated by the faculty and students of the three programs, the teachers and pupils of the said school, and the residents of the said community, represented by the barangay officials.

One activity in the said extension program was the seminar-workshop on marketing, sales, and finance on seaweed pokpoklo ice cream. This was spearheaded by Dr. Jeanina B. Batin, MATLE-HE program head, and facilitated by her faculty and students.

Research dissemination sessions were also delivered by the following faculty: Dr. Rozen C. Villa for malunggay mushroom siopao, Dr. Efren U. Galapon on synergistic integration of free-range chicken on the pest management of ampalaya farming; Dr. Jojit D. Aquino on the development of a hybrid charge controller and development of an op-amp based single axis solar tracker, and Dr. Corazon G. Pardo disseminated her research on students’ understanding of climate.
