CGAD talks on gender roles, inks pact with Santa high school

The University of Northern Philippines joins the nation in its observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women. As part of the celebration, the Center for Gender and Development extends its services at Basug National High School on November 26, 2024 through a lecture on gender roles and a signing of a memorandum of agreement to formally adopt the school.

Dr. Mae Oliva Piano, the extension coordinator, imparted matters on gender roles that maintain a social hierarchy in which men hold power over women in political and personal, as well as public and private, settings.

She highlighted that socializing men and women into these roles influence them to internalize this social hierarchy and replicate power dynamics which perpetuate gender inequality and discrimination.

She also discussed how to address violence against women and children by citing examples from media and reports from different Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC) desks. It was a fruitful discussion and ended with gratefulness from the heart.

The campaign is in pursuant to Proclamation 1172 s. 2006, declaring November 25 to December 12 as the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW, and Republic Act 10398, declaring November 25 of every year as National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children.

The campaign this year is themed “VAW Bigyang-Wakas, Ngayon na ang Oras!”
