DLH extends Literacy Campaign with Journalism Workshop at Balaleng
To address the growing challenges of fake news and the impact of artificial intelligence, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) – Department of Languages and Humanities (DLH) of University of Northern Philippines (UNP) conducted a literacy campaign and campus journalism workshop for teachers at Balaleng Elementary School, Bantay, Ilocos Sur on February 12, 2025.
Mr. Patrick James Urcia emphasized the need for clarity and conciseness in reporting, highlighting that effective news delivery requires direct and comprehensible language. He stressed that this approach equips novice writers with the skills to tackle issues related to mediocrity, journalistic methods, and communication strategies.
UNP has been actively involved in supporting Balaleng Elementary School’s reading programs. This campus journalism workshop aligns with UNP’s ongoing efforts to enhance literacy and critical thinking skills within the community.
The workshop included practical exercises on news writing, feature writing, and ethical considerations in journalism. Teachers learned techniques for verifying information, identifying bias, and crafting compelling narratives that engage readers while maintaining accuracy. By equipping educators with these skills, UNP hopes to empower them to guide their students in becoming informed and discerning consumers and producers of information in the digital age.
