MATLE brings skills training to barangay Bucalag

In celebration of World Home Economics Day 2025, the University of Northern Philippines-College of Teacher Education (UNP-CTE) extended its expertise beyond the classroom, offering practical skills training to residents of barangay Bucalag, Santa on March 21, 2025. The initiative aimed to equip the community with essential livelihood skills while strengthening the university’s commitment to community engagement.

The event was spearheaded by students and faculty from the Master of Arts in Technology and Livelihood Education-Home Economics (MATLE-HE) program. It featured two simultaneous training workshops designed to address practical needs: fish embutido food processing and domestic appliance repair.

Participants in the food processing training given by Dr. Rozen Villa, Mr. Lucky Bench Dela Cruz, and Ms. Ligaya Balbuena learned how to make fish embutido—a skill that could serve as a source of livelihood. Meanwhile, the appliance repair workshop, facilitated by Dr. Jojit Aquino, Dr. Dave Fontejon, and Dr. Jake Quitasol, taught residents how to troubleshoot and fix common household appliances like electric fans, rice cookers, and flat irons.

The program aligns with the University’s efforts to providing sustainable skills and opportunities beyond the academe.
