UEO and CHS empower Barangay Salomague with life-saving health and first aid training

Empowering local preparedness, the University Extension Office (UEO) and College of Health Sciences (CHS) brought Project SALO-KAG to Barangay Salomague, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur on September 11, 2025, training residents in basic healthcare and first aid to strengthen their emergency response capacity.

The program began with an orientation that highlighted the importance of health preparedness and the life-saving value of first aid in emergencies. Faculty members from the CHS led interactive training sessions on essential skills such as sterile wound care, blood pressure monitoring, proper use of a pulse oximeter and thermometer, and operation of a nebulizer. Each lecture was reinforced with hands-on demonstrations, giving participants the opportunity to practice and apply their newly acquired skills.

In addition, the team delivered a lecture for barangay officials focusing on community health preparedness and wellness promotion. This session emphasized the importance of readiness in managing emergencies and encouraged leaders to adopt proactive health measures within their community.

The highlight of the activity was the turnover of basic first aid kits and health apparatus to the barangay. This donation, both practical and symbolic, equips the community with immediate resources that can be utilized during emergency situations. Residents and officials alike expressed their heartfelt gratitude, recognizing the initiative as a vital contribution to their health and safety.

The activity concluded with a reaffirmation of commitment from both the UEO and CHS teams. The initiative stood as a testament to the University’s enduring advocacy for community empowerment, health promotion, and sustainable service. It also reflected the University’s vision of bridging academic expertise with community development, ensuring that the knowledge shared in classrooms transforms into real-world impact.

Through Project SALO-KAG, the UEO family and CHS faculty left a meaningful mark in Barangay Salomague, empowering residents to take charge of their health and reinforcing the community’s resilience in the face of emergencies.
