UNP-CHS, Rotary Club unite to promote elderly care and inclusive health services

Demonstrating its commitment to community service and public health, the College of Health Sciences (CHS) of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) forged a partnership with the Rotary Club of Magsingal and several local organizations through a joint medical mission and Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony on October 25, 2025, at San Lucas, Magsingal, Ilocos Sur. The event emphasized the shared goal of improving access to quality healthcare and strengthening collaboration between academic institutions and civic organizations.

Themed “Alaga at Kalinga: Upholding Filipino Culture and Gender Equality in Caring for the Elderly,” the event indicated the collective dedication of partner organizations to promoting the health, dignity, and overall well-being of senior citizens in the community. Spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Magsingal, led by President Dr. Jimbo Oandasan, the initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Ilocos Sur, headed by President Dr. Glenda Rabino, and the Senior Citizen Association of San Lucas, chaired by President Alegria Oandasan.

A significant highlight of the event was the ceremonial signing of a partnership agreement between the University of Northern Philippines–College of Health Sciences (UNP-CHS), represented by Dean Dr. Joussie Bermio, and the collaborating organizations. This formal collaboration marks a vital step toward strengthening community-based health programs and enhancing the delivery of essential health services for senior citizens. Through this agreement, the parties aim to institutionalize long-term outreach initiatives focused on preventive care, health education, and holistic well-being of the elderly—reflecting their collective commitment to foster a more compassionate and inclusive approach to community health and elder care.

During the medical mission, faculty members and students from the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program of UNP-CHS extended vital health services and conducted informative lectures on physical mobility, mental wellness, and gender equality in aging. These activities highlighted the importance of active and inclusive aging while promoting respect and dignity for the elderly—core values embedded in Filipino culture.

The initiative also reaffirmed the College’s steadfast commitment to public service and community health advancement, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on good health and well-being, gender equality, and partnerships for sustainable progress.
