UNP strengthens team spirit and excellence in two-day staff program

The University of Northern Philippines kicked off a dynamic two-day program on November 28–29, 2025, held at Java Hotel, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, uniting its non-teaching personnel in a series of policy discussions and collaborative activities. Organized by the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration in partnership with the Human Resource Management Office, the event offered staff an engaging and immersive experience aimed to foster teamwork, professional growth, and institutional excellence.

Setting an inspiring tone for the event, University of Northern Philippines (UNP) President Dr. Erwin Cadorna urged participants to embrace both change and challenge. “We embrace the changes and challenges of 2025. Let us remember that progress thrives where knowledge meets collaboration,” he said. Dr. Cadorna emphasized that the university’s future relies not merely on policies and systems, but on the dedication and passion of its people. “Today, we continue learning—because learning keeps us evolving,” he added, highlighting the institution’s commitment to growth, adaptability, and continuous development.

Dr. Cadorna delivered a message that accentuated a forward-looking vision for the University—one rooted in development, policy responsiveness, and a steadfast commitment to cultivate a future-ready institution. Emphasizing the pivotal role of continuous learning, he reminded staff that institutional growth thrives when employees remain informed and engaged. His address served not only as a call to action but also as an inspiration, urging the University community to advance with purpose, moving beyond mere compliance toward meaningful progress.

In a compelling address, Vice President for Finance and Administration Mr. Albert Tejero called on participants to reaffirm their dedication to public service. “We gather today not just to attend a program, but to renew our commitment to public service. Every policy, every reform, and every initiative begins with people who care enough to learn, grow, and serve with integrity,” he said, emphasizing that meaningful progress stems from both unity and accountability.

VP Tejero highlighted the critical role of strong administrative support in navigating institutional policies, noting that effective service delivery relies on a well-managed system that empowers personnel to perform efficiently. His remarks sought to energize participants, reminding them that improvements in service and governance begin with staff who are informed, equipped, and committed to their roles.

The opening session of the program set a strong tone for the day, focusing on the 2025 Omnibus Rules on Appointments and Human Resource actions. Led by Director Marina Garcia of the Civil Service Commission’s Ilocos Sur Field Office, the discussion provided participants with an in-depth understanding of the latest policies and appointment procedures. Director Garcia emphasized the critical importance of accuracy, compliance, and adherence to Civil Service standards—cornerstones of a transparent and merit-based public service system. Her expert guidance equipped employees with practical insights on implementing HR processes effectively, enabling them to make well-informed decisions in their respective offices. More than just a briefing, the session served as a transformative experience, emphasizing that these rules are not mere restrictions but essential frameworks that uphold fairness, efficiency, and integrity in government service.

The afternoon session shifted gears as Mr. Thomas Saddul, CEO/Chief Architect of Digital Software Corporation, delivered an engaging talk on achieving a long and healthy life. Bringing a fresh perspective, Saddul highlighted that true wellness goes beyond physical fitness, encompassing a balanced combination of habits, mindset, and self-discipline. He emphasized that personal well-being is the foundation of productivity, noting that a healthier workforce strengthens the institution as a whole. Participants were encouraged to reassess their lifestyle choices, prioritize self-care, and embrace health not merely as an option, but as a responsibility. Saddul’s presentation served as a timely reminder that professional growth should always go hand in hand with personal health and happiness.

Later in the afternoon, a lively energy was injected into the program as participants took part in dance performances and team-building exercises, skillfully facilitated by Dr. Marifel Acena with support from the Guidance and Counseling Services Office. Beyond providing entertainment, the activities emphasized key workplace values—cooperation, communication, and trust. Each dance, game, and shared moment of laughter demonstrated how collaboration can break down barriers, strengthen bonds, and reinforce the idea that true progress is achieved together. The session offered a refreshing departure from routine tasks, turning friendly competition into camaraderie and showcasing how a connected team fosters both unity and productivity.

The second day of the event concluded with spirited performance evaluations and the awarding of winners from the team-building activities. Dominating the festivities, the Binatbatan Festival Team was named overall champion, capturing first place in the dance presentation, best in costume, best in props, and best in festival dance presentation. Their impressive performance during the games secured them a total cash prize of fifteen thousand pesos.

Tying for second and third places were the Dinagyang Team and Ati-atihan Team, also sharing a total prize of fifteen thousand pesos. Notably, the Dinagyang Team received special recognition as the most presented team, earning an additional one thousand five hundred pesos.

Rounding out the leaderboard, the Pahiyas Team claimed fourth place with a six thousand  pesos cash prize, while the Sinulog Team finished fifth, receiving five thousand pesos. The awards not only celebrated individual and team achievements but also highlighted creativity, collaboration, and enthusiasm that defined the day.

In his closing message, Atty. Gerwin Rabang, Director for Administrative Services and President of NEU, emphasized the deeper significance of team building beyond mere recreation or competition. He remarked, “Team building is not simply a break from our busy days nor a contest to win prizes—it is a reminder of purpose, unity, and contribution. Every department, every position, every individual plays a vital role. Just like a basketball team where not all players may see court time, everyone remains essential. Games are won in practice, not just in play; success is built through unseen effort, support roles, and collective commitment.”

Atty. Rabang stressed that true teamwork is measured not by victories, rankings, or awards, but by each member’s recognition of their own value and willingness to contribute. Whether visible on the front lines or supporting from behind the scenes, every individual matters. “When one understands their purpose and knows they are needed, the team becomes whole,” he said. His message reinforced that a successful organization is not driven by a select few, but by all who show up with dedication, responsibility, and heart.

At UNP, true progress is achieved when every individual understands not only their responsibilities but also the value of their contribution. A team thrives when no member feels overlooked, undervalued, or left behind; even a single missing link can weaken the chain.

The recently concluded two-day program exemplified this principle. Beyond imparting knowledge, it fostered a deep sense of belonging and collective responsibility. Friendly competitions sparked excitement, thoughtful discussions encouraged understanding, and messages from leaders reinforced a shared sense of purpose.

As participants return to their offices, they carry more than certificates—they bring renewed unity, confidence, and the conviction that every member is vital to UNP’s success. Together, they move forward not merely as employees, but as a cohesive, purpose-driven team.
