Beyond Numbers: UNP’s Pi Day 2026 showcases culture, creativity, and gender equality

The University of Northern Philippines, through the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (DMNS) held “Infinite Possibilities 2026: A Pi Day Celebration of Culture, Creativity, and Gender Equality in Mathematics” at the UNP main library and hostel on March 12 – 13, 2026.

Anchored on the theme “Mathematics: Hope Through and Beyond,” the two-day event, led by DMNS Head Dr. Restituto Llagas, highlighted the transformative power of mathematics in shaping critical thinking, nurturing creativity, and promoting inclusivity and innovation. Bringing together faculty, staff, and students from the Master of Statistics and BS Mathematics programs, the initiative featured a series of engaging activities that highlighted mathematics not only as an academic discipline but also as a vital tool for empowerment and societal development.

The celebration featured Modulo Art: The Power of Transformation, which explored mathematical structures through artistic patterns and symmetry, alongside Visualizing Hope through Mathematics, a creative exhibit interpreting mathematical concepts as symbols of aspiration and possibility. Adding a competitive edge, The Grid of Greatness: A KenKen Challenge engaged participants in puzzle-based competitions designed to strengthen analytical and strategic thinking, while Beyond Infinity: The Math Quiz Bee tested knowledge in number theory, trigonometry, algebra, statistics, and geometry, fostering both intellectual rigor and healthy competition.

Through these initiatives, UNP reinforced its commitment to cultivating a culture of inclusivity, creativity, and gender equality in mathematics.
