UNP students gear up for life-saving missions in Intensive Water Safety and Survival Training

Future emergency responders took a vital step toward life-saving readiness as Bachelor of Science in Emergency Health Services (BSEHS) students of the University of Northern Philippines–College of Health Sciences completed an intensive two-day Water Safety and Survival Training on March 13–14, 2026 at J&C Resort in Caoayan, Ilocos Sur, equipping them with critical competencies in water rescue and emergency response.

The Ilocos Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), led by Mr. Rhon Arquelada, spearheaded a comprehensive training designed to equip participants with essential skills for water-related emergencies. The program focused on teaching proper rescue techniques, safe approaches to water hazards, and fundamental survival strategies, ensuring that attendees are better prepared to respond effectively in critical situations.

Throughout the activity, the trainees learned how to respond safely to incidents such as drowning, flooding, and other water hazards. Emphasis was placed on the importance of protecting oneself first before assisting others. They were also trained in floating, treading water, and conserving energy while waiting for rescue.

Practical exercises and hands-on drills allowed the students to apply what they learned in simulated situations. The training also stressed teamwork, coordination, and presence of mind, all of which are vital during emergencies.

By engaging in these activities, participants not only enhanced their readiness and confidence in managing water-related incidents but also prepared themselves for future responsibilities in emergency situations.

The organizers thanked the University of Northern Philippines, led by University President Dr. Erwin Cadorna, along with Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Rolando Navarro, College of Health Sciences Dean Dr. Joussie Bermio, Program Head Prof. Maria Yolanda Aquino, and RLE Coordinator Prof. Leila Sylvia Bautista for their support.

They also expressed gratitude to the Ilocos Sur PDRRMO and Mr. Arquelada for leading the training.
