The College of Health Sciences of the University of Northern Philippines intensified its commitment to hands-on, life-saving education as its Bachelor of Science in Emergency Health Services (BSEHS) program conducted a specialized Rappelling and Ropemanship Training for Level III students on March 19, 2026, at the CHS Building.
Held in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Vigan City, the training equipped future emergency responders with critical technical skills in rope rescue operations—reinforcing their readiness to respond effectively in high-risk and disaster situations.
The training significantly enhanced the students’ competencies in rope rescue, reinforcing their preparedness for emergency response, particularly in high-risk and high-angle scenarios. As Level III students are expected to demonstrate greater proficiency and autonomy, the program was designed to refine their foundational skills while introducing more advanced rescue techniques.
Throughout the activity, participants engaged in intensive hands-on exercises, including advanced knot tying, rope system installation, anchoring, belaying, and safety management. The training also featured controlled rappelling drills that demanded proper body mechanics, heightened situational awareness, and sound decision-making under conditions that closely simulated real-life rescue operations.
Beyond strengthening technical competencies, the activity emphasized the importance of leadership, teamwork, communication, and sound decision-making—core attributes in emergency health services. Through realistic simulation exercises, students collaborated in dynamic scenarios that closely mirrored actual rescue operations, enhancing both their confidence and responsiveness in high-pressure situations.
The training was facilitated by personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Vigan City, who imparted valuable insights and practical knowledge drawn from their field experience, providing participants with a deeper understanding of real-world rescue operations.
The successful conduct of the activity was made possible through the support of University President Dr. Erwin Cadorna, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Rolando Navarro, CHS Dean Dr. Joussie Bermio, BSEHS Program Head Prof. Maria Yolanda Aquino and, RLE Coordinator Prof. Leila Sylvia Bautista, in collaboration with BFP Vigan City and under the leadership of FCINSP Ronald Castillo.
