UNP provides expertise on genderized mental health at NSCC GAD Forum

Affirming its vital role in advancing community empowerment, the University of Northern Philippines brought its expertise to the forefront of the Nueva Segovia Consortium of Cooperatives’ (NSCC) Gender and Development (GAD) Forum on March 27, 2026 at the NSCC Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Caoayan, Ilocos Sur.

Dr. Marifel Acena, Program Head of the Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling and concurrent Head of the Student Welfare Services Office served as the resource speaker for the session “Beyond Labels: A Gender Lens on Mental Wellness.” Speaking before GAD Committee members and focal persons, she delivered an insightful discussion on the complex ways gender dynamics influence mental health experiences in diverse sectors.

Dr. Acena emphasized the need to move beyond stereotypes and one-size-fits-all approaches, advocating instead for responsive, inclusive, and gender-sensitive interventions that recognize the unique challenges faced by individuals. Her presentation reinforced the critical role of integrating a gender perspective in designing mental health programs and services that are both equitable and effective.

The forum highlighted the urgent need to advance gender-sensitive approaches to mental health, urging stakeholders to strengthen mechanisms that combat stigma and broaden access to psychosocial support systems within communities.

This collaboration further demonstrates UNP’s sustained commitment to extension services and its active partnership with NSCC in fostering resilient, inclusive, and gender-responsive communities.
