UNP CODE highlights women’s role in community safety through radio extension program

Amplifying the call for empowered and transformative leadership among women, the College of Open and Distance Education (CODE) marked National Women’s Month 2026 with a dynamic extension initiative, “Lead Like the Babaylans Filipinas: Promoting Women’s Leadership in Community Safety and Crime Prevention,” aired on March 27 via the University’s DWRS radio program.

The activity forms part of CODE’s flagship extension program, TARABAY, specifically under the TARABAY-NAINGAT Project, which advances community safety and crime prevention initiatives aligned with the BS Criminology program. Utilizing the radio platform, the initiative effectively extended its reach to a broader audience, amplifying awareness on women’s empowerment, safety, and the vital role of women’s leadership in sustaining peace and order within communities.

Serving as the resource speaker, Atty. Mirela Verzosa presented key laws and concepts aimed to protect and empower women. She discussed Republic Act No. 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act, the Safe Spaces Act (commonly known as the Bawal Bastos Law), and the concept of Battered Woman Syndrome. Emphasizing the importance of these legal frameworks, she highlighted their role in safeguarding women’s rights and called on participants to actively contribute to prevent violence and promote gender equality within their communities.

The discussion further emphasized the vital role of women as leaders and advocates of peace and security, echoing the strength and influence of the babaylans in Philippine history. Through this initiative, CODE reaffirmed its commitment to deliver gender-responsive extension services and empower communities through education and awareness.

This successful radio-based extension activity reflects the University’s continuing dedication to community engagement, women empowerment, and the promotion of a safer and more inclusive society.
