The University of Northern Philippines College of Medicine is strengthening its commitment to provide quality, practice-oriented medical education through the renewal of its clinical training partnerships with two major medical institutions in Northern Luzon.
College of Medicine (CMed) Dean Dr. Pablo Quedado met with Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC) Medical Center Chief Dr. Unity Cortez on August 27 in San Fernando City, La Union to discuss the renewal of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) governing the clerkship training of UNP Doctor of Medicine students.
The meeting sought to sustain and further enhance the collaboration between UNP and ITRMC, particularly in providing medical students with meaningful clinical exposure that complements their academic preparation.
Under the partnership, UNP medical students are given opportunities to experience a hospital environment equipped to develop their competencies in major medical specialties. The clinical exposure allows students to apply concepts and skills learned in the classroom in actual healthcare settings, while becoming familiar with the responsibilities, demands, and professional standards expected in the practice of medicine.
The engagement with ITRMC was followed by another meeting on August 28 with the administrators of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC), headed by Medical Center Chief Dr. Larry Haya, with Dr Thea Pamela Cajulao, Clerks Coordinator, to discuss the renewal of the MOA between UNP and BGHMC.
The continuing partnership with BGHMC likewise provides UNP medical students with valuable opportunities for hands-on learning and clinical training in a tertiary hospital setting. Through their exposure to different hospital wards and specialized areas, students are able to broaden their clinical knowledge and develop essential competencies needed in patient care.
Beyond ward-based training, both ITRMC and BGHMC have been providing UNP medical students opportunities to participate in clinical conferences and other professional activities conducted by various departments. These experiences allow students to observe and engage in professional discussions, case-based learning, and other activities that contribute to their development as future physicians.
The two medical centers serve as important clinical training partners of the UNP College of Medicine, helping bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and actual medical practice. Their facilities, clinical cases, medical professionals, and specialized services provide students with diverse learning experiences that complement the University’s Doctor of Medicine curriculum.
Through the renewal of these agreements, UNP seeks to ensure the continuity of quality clinical education and expand opportunities for its medical students to gain relevant experiences in different areas of healthcare.
The strengthened collaboration with ITRMC and BGHMC emphasizes the University’s continuing pursuit of competent, ethical, and practice-ready physicians, while reinforcing its commitment to partnerships that contribute to the advancement of medical education and healthcare in Northern Luzon.
