The University of Northern Philippines took the spotlight at the Philippine Guidance and Counseling Association Inc. (PGCA) 60th National Conference and 2025 International Conference, held on May 23, 2025, at St. Scholastica’s College, Manila, with the presentation of its acclaimed Project SHIELD (Support Hub for Inquiries and Ease from the Load of Distress): A Project Nurturing the Mind Strength of UNPians.

Project SHIELD, which recently achieved a commendable 9th place worldwide in the Student Support and Engagement Category of the World University Rankings for Innovations (WURI) 2024, was presented as an exemplary practice in counseling during the conference. This ongoing initiative aims to promote mental resilience and overall well-being among UNP students by offering a comprehensive and accessible support system that addresses both academic and personal challenges.

During the session, presenters Dr. Marifel Acena, Head of Student Welfare and Services Office (SWSO) and Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling (MAGC) Program, and Ms. Rowena Mamuad, Guidance Coordinator, highlighted the project’s background, objectives, implementation process, outcomes, and key lessons learned. They emphasized how the project SHIELD offers an initiative-taking approach to student support, combining counseling, peer engagement, and resource accessibility to create a healthier university environment.

Project SHIELD’s recognition at both the national and international levels mark a significant milestone for the university, setting a benchmark for student support initiatives across the country and beyond.
