The faculty of the College of Communication and Information Technology (CCIT), in collaboration with the Association of Computer Technology Students (ACTS) officers, conducted a seminar on computer literacy in Sta. Maria West Central School (SMWCS) on April 2, 2025. This initiative aimed to equip young students with essential digital skills, promoting a strong foundation in technology.
The program featured a series of lectures designed to introduce students the fundamental computer concepts and practical applications.
Mr. Daryl Buen led the discussion on the basics of computers, offering a comprehensive introduction to the subject that provided to both beginners and those looking to deepen their understanding. His lecture covered fundamental concepts and explained the input-process-output model, illustrating how raw data is entered, processed, and transformed into meaningful information.
Mr. Mariano Romano, Jr. presented the basic productivity tools, emphasizing their importance in streamlining everyday tasks and enhancing efficiency, particularly in fulfilling school requirements and projects. He delivered a presentation on Microsoft Word, focusing on the diverse formatting and editing features that enhance document professionalism and readability. He likewise discussed the key formatting techniques and demonstrated the use of bullet points and numbered lists to organize content effectively and discussed the importance of headers and footers for creating polished documents.
Dr. Jennyfer Alasaas delivered a compelling session on internet and online safety, featuring the critical importance of promoting responsible digital behavior among students. Her lecture stressed key aspects of internet safety, including recognizing online threats, safeguarding personal information, and adopting secure practices when interacting in digital spaces. By addressing the growing risks of cyberbullying, phishing scams, and privacy violations, Dr. Alasaas emphasized the need for preventive measures to protect young users from malicious online activities.
Dr. Honeygirl Avo concluded the educational segment with a lecture on keyboarding skills, emphasizing their critical role in fostering efficient and effective computer use. Her lecture highlighted the importance of mastering touch-typing techniques, which enable students to type quickly and accurately. By developing muscle memory and proper finger placement, students can significantly enhance their typing speed and reduce errors, allowing mental energy to focus on the content of their work rather than the mechanics of typing.
Following the lecture, ACTS Governor Ms. Trina Paula Ablog and her officers distributed school supplies and tumblers to the students to further enrich the experience and promote a sense of community. The event concluded with the closing remark of Mrs. Wilma Brillantes, Principal of SMWCS, who expressed appreciation to the University of Northern Philippines most especially to the CCIT faculty and ACTS officers for the collaborative effort.
This seminar not only enhanced the students’ understanding of computer technology but also emphasized the importance of digital literacy in today’s interconnected world. The partnership between CCIT and SMWCS serves as a model for educational institutions seeking to bridge the gap between technology and education, empowering young minds for a future where digital skills are more important.
