CPAd empowers Nagcullooban thru education, environmental stewardship
In celebration of its 59th founding anniversary, the University of Northern Philippines organized a community outreach program on October 17, 2024, to strengthen its connection with local communities. The College of Public Administration visited Nagcullooban, Sinait, Ilocos Sur, its partner community.
A tree-planting activity and voter education lecture were conducted under the theme “Botosmo, Bilegmo: Mangitunda iti Panagbalbaliw ti Biag ken Pagiliantayo.” The event brought together the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials and residents, headed by Punong Barangay Eduard I. Eugenio.
Dr. Joselito D. de la Rosa, CPAd Dean, led the tree-planting activity, encouraging residents to contribute to environmental sustainability. Following this, Ms. Ivy C. Cariño delivered an environmental awareness lecture, emphasizing the importance of responsible ecological practices.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abelardo A. Anicas, BPA program head, also discussed youth participation in the electoral process. He noted that the youth have the biggest population and contribution during elections and that they should exercise their rights to vote and be the voice of change in the community. He also encouraged the youth to actively involve themselves and participate in different programs and activities in line with the preservation of the integrity of the youth in politics and leveraging their voices during elections.
“Ang Fake, Fake Mo! How to Detect Fake News” was discussed by Dean de la Rosa. He emphasized the rampant spread of fake news in social media, most especially that the 2025 election is coming. He also shared tips for avoiding fake news like evaluating the source of the news or information, whether it comes from an authentic and reputable source or not. He encouraged everyone to be vigilant against the spread of fake news, disinformation, and misinformation.
Dr. Alma C. Somera, the extension coordinator, extended her words of gratitude to the participants and assured them that there will be more activities to be conducted in Nagcullooban as the partner community of the College.
Also present during the outreach program were members of Bullalayaw Inc., a voluntary organization headed by Mr. Raimundo Arce. Members provided free haircuts to the members of the community.
