DMNS builds resilience with cultural insights
The University of Northern Philippines through the College of Arts and Sciences- Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (CAS-DMNS) has taken a unique approach to disaster preparedness by integrating Indigenous knowledge with modern strategies, showcasing the value of traditional wisdom in building resilient communities, themed, “Culture of Preparedness: Indigenous Knowledge in Disaster Risk Reduction,” held on March 21, 2025, at Daclapan Elementary School in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.
The activity focused on blending Indigenous practices with contemporary disaster risk reduction (DRR) frameworks. The event featured workshops on resilient infrastructure, traditional early warning systems, basic life support, and tsunami drills, led by experts such as Prof. Jenny Grace I. Almazan and Prof. Rhommel Aninag.
This program emphasized inclusivity, ensuring participation across diverse genders and SOGIE identities while addressing social gaps in disaster management. By combining Indigenous knowledge with modern techniques, UNP aims to enhance community resilience against natural hazards while preserving cultural heritage. This approach aligns with broader efforts to integrate local and Indigenous knowledge into DRR, as seen in other initiatives like the DANAS Project, which uses local languages and community experiences to improve disaster preparedness.
The initiative also reflects a growing recognition of the importance of Indigenous knowledge in disaster management, as highlighted in studies on communities in the Philippines, where traditional practices have proven effective in reducing disaster risks, with the collaboration between traditional and modern strategies, UNP is paving the way for more sustainable and culturally informed disaster preparedness efforts.
