Advancing environmental sustainability through collective action, the University of Northern Philippines College of Architecture and Built Environment (CArBE) joined the CArBE Alumni, the United Architects of the Philippines–Ilocos Ciudad Fernandina Chapter, the National Tobacco Administration (NTA), environmental NGOs, the local government unit of Sta. Maria, and community volunteers in a tree-planting initiative at Pinsal Falls, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur, on July 25, 2026.
The initiative reinforced ongoing efforts to restore and protect the Pinsal Falls watershed through the planting of native and adaptive tree species, including calantes, kakawati, ipil-ipil, and langka. Beyond increasing forest cover, the activity promotes climate resilience, safeguards local biodiversity, strengthens soil stability, and helps preserve one of Ilocos Sur’s most valued natural landmarks for future generations.
The collaborative effort reflects the shared commitment of academic institutions, government agencies, professional organizations, environmental groups, local government units, alumni, and community members to promote sustainable environmental stewardship and strengthen partnerships for ecological conservation.
The successful implementation of the environmental initiative was spearheaded by Engr. Maila Ragasa, CArBE Extension Coordinator, whose leadership ensured the seamless coordination of the activity. The undertaking was made possible through the strong collaboration among key institutional and professional partners led by Ar. Christian Nico Pilotin, President of the United Architects of the Philippines–Ilocos Ciudad Fernandina Chapter; Ar. Mark Anthony Artates, President of the CArBE Alumni Association; and Ar. Christian Santamaria, CArBE Alumni Coordinator. Their collective efforts exemplified the shared commitment of the academe, professional organizations, and alumni in advancing environmental conservation and promotion of a meaningful community engagement.
Representing the College of Architecture and Built Environment were Ar. Mon-Cres Toje, Dean CArBE; Ar. Ludivina Lozano, Program Head of the BS Environmental Planning and current President of the Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners–Ilocos Chapter; Ar. Precious Beulah T. Gascon, Program Head of the BS Architecture; and Ar. Charles Angelo Andrada, College Information Coordinator.
Through its participation, UNP reaffirmed its commitment to extension and community engagement by supporting initiatives that advance environmental sustainability and the preservation of the province’s natural resources.
