OU students assured of mental health aid in hard times

Students of the UNP Open University (OU) were assured of the University’s help during difficult times, especially when dealing with mental health issues.

This was the highlight of the Growth Session for OU students held by the Guidance and Counseling Services and Information and Orientation Services (GCS & IOS) Office through a webinar on May 10, 2024. It zeroed in on the topic “Bliss Route: Traversing a Thoughtful Journey to Mind Strength.”

Ms. Monique Tubera, guidance counselor and resource speaker, described mental health as being able to engage in “productive activities and fulfilling relationships with others,” as well as being able to adapt to changes.

She emphasized that mental health is crucial, for it affects how individuals think, feel, and act and is one of the keys to happiness. It also enables them to be more confident in their decisions and actions and gives them flexibility to cope with different feelings and situations. More importantly, it affects other areas of health and well-being.

Ms. Tubera encouraged the participants to be mindful of signs of mental health issues. These might include poor appetite, lack of sleep, pulling away from people and usual activities, lack of energy, feelings of hopelessness, and mood swings.

She reiterated that reaching out for help matters from one’s immediate family and community. The GCS & IOS Office may likewise be reached through its hotline (0965-076-5618) and email (gcishds@unp.edu.ph).

Other sources of help include the National Center for Mental Health Crisis Hotline, the Philippine Mental Health Association Online Support, and the Philippine Psychiatric Association: Mind Matters.

The said webinar also featured the staff, programs, and services of the GCS & IOS Office with Dr. Marifel Q. Acena at the helm, assuring the participants of the Office’s readiness.

One of GCS & IOS Office’s programs, Growth Sessions are designed to assist students through interventions designed to address their specific needs. The program is one among the many programs and activities of the Office of Student Affairs and Services headed by Dr. Mariano Paterno Avila.
