At the Regional Learning Conference hosted by Philippine Christian University’s Master in Management, major in Environmental Planning program, a notable panel of experts addressed the vital connection between cultural heritage and environmental sustainability.

Held at Hotelinda Suites in Vigan City on November 9, the conference welcomed approximately 162 participants and focused on the theme “Preserving Heritage: The Intersection of Cultural Identity and Environmental Sustainability.”

Alongside Dr. Fatima Nicetas Rabang-Alonzo, the conference featured prominent speakers Ar./EnP Estrelita I. Rugnao, Ar./EnP Ludivina A. Lozano, Engr./EnP Saturnino T. Tablada, and Dr. Jerome C. Orate, who each shared valuable insight into integrating cultural values with modern environmental planning.

Their expertise emphasized the ethical and practical considerations essential for promoting sustainable practices that honor and protect cultural heritage.

In her keynote address, Dr. Alonzo emphasized that the preservation of heritage, whether cultural or environmental, is a fundamental pillar of both local people’s shared identity and collective future.

She pointed out that, as the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion, the relationship between cultural identity and environmental sustainability becomes increasingly significant.

The intersection of these two domains offers unique insights into how the past can inform a more sustainable and harmonious future.

“Preserving heritage is not merely about safeguarding traditions and monuments; it’s about recognizing the deep connections between culture, community, and the environment, and using this understanding to foster resilience, conservation, and sustainable development,” Dr. Alonzo explained.

Dr. Jovertlee C. Pudan, PCU site coordinator and professor, presented Dr. Alonzo with a certificate of appreciation, recognizing her significant contributions as a resource person.
