OU, CGAD hold symposium on LGBTQ+ advocacy

The Open University, in collaboration with the Center for Gender and Development, hosted a symposium titled “Creating Inclusive Spaces: Strategies for LGBTQ+ Advocacy in Academic Settings” at Naglaoa-an National High School on November 21.

The event addressed the pressing need for LGBTQ+ representation and support within the educational sector, ensuring that all students of all gender identities and sexual orientations feel safe, respected, and valued.

The symposium attracted educators, students, and school administrators, offering a platform for discussion on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in academic environments.

Dr. Archie Martinez emphasized the importance of creating inclusive spaces, advocating for policies that prevent discrimination and educating the school community on the rights and needs of LGBTQ+ students. Practical strategies for fostering acceptance and inclusivity within schools were shared, empowering participants to take concrete steps toward building a more equitable academic setting.

OU highlighted that the activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10: Reduced Inequalities, promoting social and educational equity. By addressing gender-based discrimination and supporting diverse identities, the symposium contributed to the broader objective of reducing inequalities in education.

The event concluded with a commitment from participants to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights within their own institutions, setting the foundation for continued collaboration in creating inclusive and supportive academic environments.
