UNP, UC research seminar equips faculty researchers with journal publication skills

The second day of the Research Publication Training Series Phase 1, spearheaded by the University of Northern Philippines through the University Research Development Office (URDO), in partnership with the University of the Cordilleras (UC), was held at the Tadena Hall, Administration Building on May 17.

Dr. Thelma Domingo-Palaoag, Director of the UC Innovation and Technology Transfer Office, served as the resource speaker and delivered a lecture titled “Journal Selection and Manuscript Tailoring” to enhance the skills of faculty researchers for successful research publication.

She shared insights on writing a clear and effective introduction, emphasizing the importance of including the research gap and structure. Dr. Domingo-Palaoag also covered tips on reviewing related literature, methodology presentation, results and discussion, conclusion writing, and proper citation in APA 7th edition format.

During her lecture, she emphasized the critical evaluation and synthesis of information in the review of related literature, the thorough presentation of methodology details, and the reflective writing approach for results and discussion sections.

Dr. Domingo-Palaoag stressed the importance of providing practical applications, actionable recommendations, and highlighting innovation to make an impact with research.

In an interview, Dr.Palaoag emphasized that the highlight of the seminar was to enable faculty researchers to search for a journal for their respective research, as this was the initial step they needed to take in finding a suitable journal for their research paper.

“You can’t just publish anywhere. You really need to align the scope and the goal of your research with the journal’s focus,” she quoted.

She also stressed the importance and critical nature of this process as the first step for a researcher to enhance the visibility of their study. The subsequent step involved refining the research further.

Additionally, she highlighted the seminar’s benefits to the academe, stating that research was not only a mandatory obligation for publication based on CMO #15 series of 2019, but it also aided in enhancing an institution’s ranking.

“We cannot separate research from the trifocal knowledge of HCI or academia, which encompasses research, teaching, and extension,” she said.

Apart from improving rankings, she pointed out that researchers themselves benefit from using their publications for professional growth, as it significantly impacts them both as individuals and professionals in their research careers.

Furthermore, a workshop was conducted. Participants reorganized their research introductions by following the structure presented earlier and highlighted all the elements to ensure easy understanding. They also reformatted their methodology section, preformatted the results and discussion based on the guidelines of their chosen journal, and crafted a compelling conclusion.

The resource speaker provided comments and suggestions to further enhance their outputs.
