Open University hosts seminar on spiritual upliftment for Persons Deprived of Liberty

As part of the 37th Prison Awareness Month celebration, the University of Northern Philippines Open University (UNP-OU) successfully conducted a seminar on spiritual upliftment for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) confined at the Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail.

This event, held on November 15 and themed “The Church Thru the VIPS (Volunteer in Prison Services): Partners of the PDLs in Their Journey Towards Wholeness with Full of Hope,” was spearheaded by the OU’s BS Criminology program and broadcasted on the University’s official radio program at the DWRS Commando Radio, reaching audiences across Ilocos Sur and beyond.

The seminar featured Dr. Benjie N. Gapate of the Office of Student Affairs and Services. He addressed the essential role of spiritual resilience in the journey of PDLs toward personal transformation and reintegration into society. Emphasizing faith and hope as pillars of rehabilitation, he guided participants through reflections and strategies aimed at nurturing their spiritual and emotional well-being.

“By connecting PDLs with resources that uplift them spiritually, we empower them to envision a future beyond incarceration, to build inner strength, and to find purpose,” Dr. Gapate noted during his talk. He encouraged attendees to see themselves as individuals with potential and dignity, worthy of a renewed path forward.

This radio-broadcasted seminar is part of the University’s commitment to serving marginalized communities, fulfilling its extension service mission through meaningful partnerships with local government and faith-based groups.

The activity also underscores UNP’s dedication to supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to good health and well-being and reduced inequalities by providing PDLs with access to spiritual and emotional support.

The event was well-received by participants, who expressed their gratitude for the messages of hope and guidance. By broadcasting the seminar over DWRS and livestreaming on Facebook, UNP successfully reached a wider audience, promoting the ideals of compassion and inclusivity across the province.
