DOST, UNP, PGIS launch SILLAG in Ilocos Sur

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office, in partnership with the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) and the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur (PGIS), officially launched the Ilocos Sur leg of the SILLAG Startup Summit and Hackathon on August 21-22, 2024 at the Tadena Hall, University of Northern Philippines, Vigan City.

Derived from the Ilokano word “sillag” or “sellag” which means “illumination,” the Sustainability, Innovation, Leadership, Linkages, Access and Growth (SILLAG) in Region 1 is a flagship program from the DOST that aims to empower aspiring entrepreneurs and teams in establishing their brand or service through startups.

Dr. Erwin Cadorna, represented by VP Rolando Navarro, welcomed the participants from all over the province. “Today marks a commitment to sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth that will shape our future. By embracing this framework, we can create a vibrant academic community that not only educates but also empowers individuals to become leaders in sustainability,” Cadorna said.

“As we embark on this journey, let us remember that the path to sustainability is not a solitary endeavor. It requires collaboration, creativity, and a shared commitment to a better future. Together, we can harness the power of SILLAG to transform our respective institutions into a beacon of sustainability and innovation,” he added.

Ilocos Sur Governor Jeremias “Jerry” Singson, represented by Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Christopher Abraham Baterina, expressed his profound gratitude to the DOST and UNP for bringing such endeavor to the province. He also shared his hopes that this will encourage more aspiring entrepreneurs to rise and embrace the continuous change brought by technology.

Baterina, on his part as the Committee Chairman on Science and Technology, was pleased that the SILLAG was conducted in Ilocos Sur. “I have seen how great startups have contributed to society, especially when I visited the US. Having this activity here in our province truly gives me the motivation to encourage our young individuals to come up with their own ideas,” he said.

“I hope that after this event, the participants will be able to come up with their startups that would cater specially the economic and matters on national security,” he hoped.

A startup refers to a company in its initial stages of operation. These are founded by one or more entrepreneurs who wish to develop a product or service for which they believe is a necessity and a demand from its clientele. Startups usually start with high costs and limited revenue; hence, owners often look for capital from a variety of sources, such as angel investors and venture capitalists, or they could also consider “winging it” by funding the startup at the owners’ expense.

More than 20 teams tested their mettle for the best startup proposal in Ilocos Sur. The winner for this leg will represent Ilocos Sur and in the battle against the best of the provinces in Region I in October 2024.
