In an eye-opening commencement speech, Hon. Hedy Jose B. Lardizabal, Director IV, Civil Service Commission Regional Office I, the guest of honor and speaker of Cluster III (College of Business Administration and Accountancy, College of Hospitality and Tourism Management, College of Public Administration and Development, and College of Law) on June 4, at the UNP Gymnasium, which then began with the powerful story of Alberto, a fisherman whom after years of relentless struggle, led his group safely home during a fierce storm by following a flickering light.
This light, it turned out, was his wife’s courageous act of burning their own house to guide them through the darkness. This vivid metaphor encapsulated the essence of perseverance and hope—a beacon for anyone navigating life’s storms.
Alberto’s story reminded us that every journey toward success is fraught with challenges. Dr. Lardizabal emphasized that the path is rarely smooth; it demands sacrifices, resilience, and sometimes enduring failures. Yet, it is through persistence that one can overcome obstacles. Just as Alberto and his group relied on a fragile light to find their way, individuals must hold onto hope and keep moving forward, even when the future seems uncertain.
He also highlighted a crucial lesson for graduates, “true success is not measured by academic accolades alone.” While medals and grades are commendable, the Dr. Hedy stressed that, “building credibility and developing strong character [is important].” Continuous learning and integrity form the foundation of a meaningful life. “Education, therefore, is not just about intelligence but also about cultivating virtues that enable one to contribute positively to society” — assonates humility in every juncture and the promise to be a beacon of light to the people in need, hence, are we of intelligence or of character?
Graduates were encouraged to seek deeper purpose in their lives. Success is not solely personal achievement but involves helping others, engaging with the community, and giving back. Dr. Lardizabal’s message is clear, stating that, “finding meaning in life’s events—both good and bad—empowers individuals to grow and make a difference.”
With timeless advice, be present for others, strive to be your best for the benefit of those around you, and create something meaningful in your life and community. Success is measured by the positive impact we have on others.
With heartfelt appreciation for parents, mentors, and officials, the speaker leaves the graduates inspired to face new challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead, carrying Alberto’s flickering light of hope and perseverance within them.
