The University of Northern Philippines College of Architecture (UNP CArch) has  again showcased its design excellence, securing 1st place in the Design a Learning Hub Contest (Secondary/Tertiary Category) during the Vigan City Fiesta Education Day 2025. The competition, themed “We are Future Ready: Nurturing Learning Leadership Towards Future-Ready Education,” challenged participants to transform the library annex at the Vigan Conservation Complex into an innovative and inclusive center for learning.

Representing UNP CArch were Jovi Anne Haduca, Marc Angelo Gacusan, Mhark Jaylord Duque, Mark Jerome Ganal, and Nomer Gecobe Jr., under the mentorship of Ar. Charles Angelo T. Andrada. Their Capiz-Inspired Library concept impressed the judges with its seamless integration of cultural heritage and modern sustainability, setting it apart from other entries.

Drawing inspiration from Vigan’s iconic Capiz windows, the design symbolizes transparency, interconnectedness, and enlightenment—a “window of heritage” that connects the past, present, and future. The team incorporated fluted wood, Capiz-inspired elements, and locally sourced materials, ensuring a harmonious blend of tradition and sustainability. Additionally, energy-efficient systems and modular, flexible furniture enhanced the space’s adaptability to diverse learning needs.

“Our vision was to create a space that not only pays tribute to Vigan’s architectural heritage but also fosters an inclusive and future-ready learning environment,” shared the team. “This achievement reflects our creativity, passion, and dedication to meaningful and sustainable design.”

This victory highlights the exceptional talent and commitment of UNP CArch in shaping forward-thinking, culturally rooted design solutions. It also reinforces the College’s dedication to preserving heritage while embracing innovation in the field of architecture.
