Strengthening its commitment to academic excellence and outcomes-based education, the College of Nursing of the University of Northern Philippines convened its faculty members for a Course Syllabi Enhancement Seminar-Workshop on September 8, 2026 at the Science Complex Audio-Visual Room.
The College reinforced its drive for curriculum excellence as faculty members undertook a comprehensive review and enhancement of their course syllabi, anchored on current Commission on Higher Education standards and the University’s institutional goals. The activity formally opened with an address by Dr. Francis Don Nero, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of collective engagement in strengthening the quality and relevance of nursing education.
Moving beyond compliance, the faculty focused on integrating Gender and Development (GAD) principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into course content, learning activities, and assessment frameworks. The initiative sought to ensure that classroom instruction not only meets academic and professional standards but also develops socially responsive, inclusive, and globally oriented nursing graduates equipped to address contemporary health and community challenges.
The session drew on the expertise of key university specialists to translate curriculum improvement into practical strategies for the faculty. Dr. Luzviminda Relon, Director of the Instruction and Faculty Development Office, led a substantive discussion on the pressing need to continuously enhance curricula and course syllabi in response to the evolving demands of higher education. She emphasized the importance of keeping academic offerings relevant, responsive, and aligned with established educational standards and institutional directions.
Complementing the discussion, Prof. Lester Aaron facilitated an instructional session on the essential “do’s and don’ts” of syllabus design, providing faculty members with practical guidance on developing clear, coherent, and pedagogically sound course documents. The session highlighted the critical role of well-designed syllabi in establishing consistent learning expectations, strengthening instructional delivery, and ensuring meaningful alignment among course outcomes, learning activities, and assessment.
The workshop culminated in a strong call for faculty members to translate curriculum enhancement into meaningful educational outcomes. In his inspirational message, Dr. Rolando Navarro urged the faculty to embrace innovation while steadfastly upholding academic integrity, emphasizing that a well-crafted syllabus is more than an academic requirement—it is a strategic roadmap that guides teaching and learning toward the development of competent, ethical, and compassionate healthcare professionals.
Closing the activity, Prof. Mercedes Anicas commended the faculty for their active participation, commitment to professional growth, and dedication to continuous curriculum refinement. She stressed the value of sustained faculty development in keeping nursing education responsive to emerging healthcare needs. Through initiatives such as the seminar-workshop, the UNP College of Nursing continues to advance learner-centered, outcomes-based, gender-responsive, and globally oriented nursing education, reinforcing its commitment to produce graduates prepared to make meaningful contributions to the healthcare profession and society.
