UNP promotes workplace well-being and gender equality at PGIS
VIGAN CITY — The University of Northern Philippines extended its support to women in the workforce of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur (PGIS) through a significant initiative on March 17, 2025. Dr. Marifel Acena, Head of the Student Welfare Services Office and Program Head for the Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling, delivered timely presentations on stress management and women’s well-being in the workplace. The event took place at the Provincial Farmers Livelihood Development Center in Vigan City.
Her discussion was part of a forum promoting gender equality and safety, discussing Republic Acts 9262, 9710, and 11311, addressing gender-based violence, women’s rights, and workplace safety.
Dr. Acena highlighted that stress and mental health challenges disproportionately affect women due to unique stressors like gender-based discrimination. Effective management strategies and supportive environments can mitigate these effects. Prioritizing mental well-being is crucial for improving productivity, employee satisfaction, and retention. By fostering healthier environments, employers enhance not only women’s well-being but also organizational success.
The legislative frameworks discussed provides a foundation for promoting gender equality. RA 9262 protects women from violence, while RA 9710 ensures women’s rights in employment. Republic Act 11311 addresses harassment in public spaces.
Dr. Acena’s insights emphasize the need for inclusive workplaces that address both legal and cultural barriers to gender equality, by doing so, organizations can improve gender equality and overall performance.
