UNP pushes heritage preservation with MoA and conservation management plan presentation
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), through the College of Architecture, formalized a partnership for the conservation of the St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church Complex with the Official Turnover of the Conservation Management Plan and the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on March 10, 2025, at UNP Tadena Hall. The agreement establishes a collaborative framework among UNP, the church, and local stakeholders to support long-term preservation initiatives.
The MoA signing was attended by UNP President Dr. Erwin Cadorna, Dr. Fatima Rocamora, Vice President for Research and Extension, Engr. Satornino Tablada, Engr. Maila Ragasa, CArch extension coordinator, Dr. Lloyd Mata, Director of the UEO, Dr. Fatima Nicetas Rabang-Alonzo, Dean of CArch, Rev. Fr. Albert Rabe, Parish Priest of St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish, Michael Rafanan, church project coordinator, and Filiburt Maybituin, Parish Pastoral Council representative. The agreement outlines shared responsibilities in implementing conservation strategies for the historical site.
The event also featured the presentation of the Conservation Management Plan by 5th-year Architecture students from Sections 5A, 5B, and 5C. Their proposals focused on Church Restoration, Parish Convent Restoration, Plaza Enhancement and Inventory of Movable Objects, and Church Atrium and Side Grounds Restoration. These initiatives integrate conservation strategies with sustainable architectural practices.
Dr. Alonzo highlighted the role of conservation in maintaining cultural heritage, while Dr. Rocamora, VPRE, emphasized the alignment of the initiative with Sustainable Development Goals, underscoring the significance of detailed preservation efforts.
The St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church Complex holds historical and cultural significance, making its conservation a priority for both UNP and the local community. The established partnership provides a structured approach to preservation efforts, ensuring the site’s continued maintenance and historical integrity for future generations.
