James Molina, a student from the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD), landed in 2nd place, bringing home the silver prize at the prestigious 57th Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC) held at Ayala Museum, Makati City, November 15.

 

Out of more than 2,300 entries, Molina’s artwork “Kaylan pa kaya matutuldukan” stood out after undergoing preliminary screenings, physical screening, and final judging. His piece, mentored by Mr. Benedict Villamor Bautista, reflects the pressing questions and struggles that shape the Filipino experience.

 

“It feels incredibly overwhelming and emotional. I am proud and deeply moved because this isn’t just my achievement—it belongs to everyone who supported me. I didn’t feel like I was alone on that stage; I felt like I carried with me the pride and trust of the entire Ilocos region and the love of my UNP family,” Molina shared.

 

Molina’s art statement, “Panghihirap ng kapwa kong Pilipino—kailan kaya matutuldukan? Mga hidwaan ng mga bansa—kailan kaya magwawakas? Kailan kaya makakalaya sa pang-aapi? Malaya, ngunit may kinatatakutan,” echoes the uncertainties that continue to affect society. He also emphasized hope and unity as critical forces for change: “Tuldok ng pag-asa: pagkakaisa para sa maliwanag na kinabukasan, at pagsasama-sama upang mabuo, at maging matibay ang kulay ng isang malikhaing Pilipino.”

 

This marks the first time in many years that the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) has reached the Top 5 in the Oil/Acrylic Category, achieving an even more remarkable feat by securing 2nd place at the Shell NSAC.

 

During the awarding ceremony, themed “Lika na, Likha pa ng Obra,” Molina received a silver plaque, a cash prize, a limited-edition jacket, and a commemorative t-shirt.

 

“As a 4th-year student, this award also feels like leaving a legacy. I want my time at UNP to be remembered as a period when I proudly carried the university’s name in a national competition,” he added.

 

The Shell NSAC remains a platform for young artists to express their creativity and contribute to meaningful conversations through art. Molina’s recognition serves as a testament to the power of art in addressing the challenges and hopes of a nation.
