DMNS faculty hold tree planting
As a way of contributing to SDG 15, Life on Land, the faculty members of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences held a tree-planting activity in Brgy. Rebba, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur on March 6, 2024.
Stressing the University’s commitment to foster social and personnel development, the activity is titled “Growing Together: A Gender Inclusive, Cultural Tree Planting Experience cum Environmental Awareness Seminar.”
More specifically, the location is along the Gaco River of Brgy. Rebba, a place where anybody may unwind and destress. But in the event of heavy rain, mudslides and river floods would occur.
The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences believes that it is necessary to combat climate change and other environmental issues, and one of the most effective ways is through planting trees. Tree planting improves the quality of our natural surroundings to a considerable extent. By absorbing hundreds of liters of rainfall, they contribute to preventing flooding and soil erosion, among other environmental advantages.
The activity contributes to the achievement of SDG 13, specifically on urgently combating climate change and its effects, as well as SDG 15, which calls for the protection, restoration, and promotion of sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable forest management, combating desertification, stopping and reversing land degradation, and stopping the loss of biodiversity.
The activity is part of commemoration of the 58th Founding Anniversary of the College of Arts and Sciences, specifically the Volunteer Day). It highlights the importance of environmental awareness to lessen the consequences of climate change, protect and preserve natural resources, and improve the welfare of present and future generations by maintaining ecosystems, biodiversity, and resource efficiency to ensure a sustainable future.
