DSSP hosts extension activity at Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail

The Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy held an extension activity at the Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail, focused on fostering hope and personal growth among Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). It took place at Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur on September 26, 2024.

In his opening remarks, Provincial Warden Raymond Tabios expressed gratitude to the department for their ongoing commitment to the provincial jail and emphasized the importance of such activities in providing inmates with a sense of hope. “These sessions remind our PDLs that this is not the end of their journey or mission,” he stated.

Themed “Building Bridges of Hope: Empowering Persons Deprived of Liberty Through Existential Flourishing Cum Legal Clinic,” the event featured insightful sessions on mindfulness by Ms. Victoria Antonia Rafanan and positive psychology presented by Ms. Monique Tubera. These topics aimed to equip participants with tools for mental well-being and resilience. Also, Atty. Christian Casildo and Atty. Ignatius Tablada conducted a legal clinic for the PDLs.

The event aimed to enhance mental health awareness and create a supportive environment where inmates can explore new perspectives on their lives. By encouraging mindfulness and positive thinking, the Department hoped to instill a sense of empowerment and self-worth among the participants.

As the day progressed, participants engaged actively, reflecting on their experiences, and learning from the interactive discussions. The initiative underscored the department’s dedication to community outreach and learning, even within the walls of a correctional facility.

Through these collaborative efforts, the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy continues to bridge gaps, inspire change, and offer hope to those seeking a brighter future.
