The College of Criminal Justice Education and the International Affairs and External Linkages Office organized an international webinar on May 14, 2025 that brought together Universitas Potensi Utama (UPU) of Indonesia and the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) to highlight the principles and best practices of cybersecurity. Through Zoom, the event, “Introduction to Cybersecurity: Principles and Practices,” brought together educators and students from both universities as well as other HEIs regarding urgent cybersecurity problems and solutions.
Dr. Arlan Reburon of UNP College of Criminal Justice Education discussed the CIA Triad and cybersecurity fundamentals from a criminological standpoint where he concluded his presentation by quoting “Cybersecurity goes beyond just computers and codes – it’s about keeping people and organizations safe from online threads through awareness.”
Atty. Fitri Yani, M.H., from UPU, gave insightful guidance on how to integrate cybersecurity at her institution. She additionally mentioned the existing laws that are being enforced in Indonesia. She emphasized that, “The United States, with a longer experience in dealing with cybercrime, has a more mature system with a multi-sector approach and strong coordination between agencies. Indonesia will adopt their best practices for handling cybercrime.”
This initiative underscores the commitment of UNP and UPU to equip students and professionals with critical knowledge in cybersecurity, reflecting the growing importance of digital safety in academic and professional spheres. This initiative also aligned with the SDG 16 in promoting partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society.
