Empowering the backbone, igniting purpose, passion, and values

A seminar on “Moral Values and Professionalism in the Workplace cum Team Building” energized the 177 non-teaching personnel of the University of Northern Philippines at Santiago Cove Hotel & Restaurant on June 13, 2025. Organized by the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration in collaboration with the Human Resource Management Unit, the event set out to elevate ethical standards and strengthen teamwork across the institution.

UNP President Dr. Erwin Cadorna, delivered his message wherein he stressed the vital role of moral values and professionalism as the foundation of effective public service. He highlighted that, “true excellence in the workplace is achieved not only through skills and knowledge, but through integrity, respect, and a shared commitment to ethical conduct.” Dr. Cadorna encouraged all non-teaching personnel to embrace these principles, reminding everyone that each act of honesty and teamwork contributes to the university’s mission.

Mr. Albert Tejero, Vice President for Finance and Administration, expressed gratitude to all participants and organizers for making the event possible. He emphasized the significance of gathering as a unified community to reflect on the core values that define the workplace—integrity, professionalism, and teamwork.

Esteemed service provider Dr. Moderina Malcaba, a former UNP professor, led sessions on moral values, professionalism, blending insightful talks with interactive workshops and group activities. These sessions fostered camaraderie and allowed for open discussions on real workplace challenges and ethical dilemmas.

The orientation on the PhilHealth KonSulTa Health Package, led by Dr. Marsha Mishelle Cabuena and Mr. Nowell Lapid, highlighted its benefits, including consultations, diagnostic exams, and lab tests for common illnesses. They explained eligibility, coverage, and how members can access these preventive health services to reduce out-of-pocket costs. Meanwhile, Ms. April Tactay’s session on the GSIS Multi-Purpose Loan Flex/Max covered loan features such as amounts, interest rates, repayment terms, and application procedures. She emphasized responsible borrowing and financial management to help members maximize the loan for personal or emergency needs. Both orientations aimed to empower members with valuable health and financial knowledge.

Participants were equipped with practical tools to enhance both their personal integrity and collective performance, thanks to the dynamic team building activities held in the afternoon led by the Guidance and Counselling Services, under the leadership of Dr. Marifel Acena, these sessions featured a series of engaging group activities specifically designed to strengthen camaraderie and trust among colleagues.

The activities went beyond simple games—each was thoughtfully crafted to encourage open communication, collaboration, and mutual support. Participants tackled real-life scenarios and challenges, learning strategies that are not only applicable in the workplace but also relatable to everyday life. These impactful exercises helped foster a sense of unity and belonging, empowering everyone to bring out the best in themselves and their teams.

The event concluded with Chief Administrative Officer Atty. Gerwin Rabang’s stirring reminder that, “We should work not only for the ratings but because we love to work—and that is a commitment and true meaning of public service.”

At the end of the day, attendees didn’t just gain new knowledge; they experienced firsthand the value of teamwork and ethical leadership, leaving them inspired and ready to contribute positively to the institution.
